The SORBET Project: sharing at a symposium on simulations in education and the COVID-19 crisis

i am happy and excited to share that the MOFET Institute - which is a center for research, curriculum and program development in teacher education based in Tel Aviv - has afforded my team the opportunity to share about the Socially Responsible Behavior through Embodied Thinking (SORBET) Project, during an online symposium themed on 'Innovation and growth during uncertain times: simulations in education and the COVID-19 crisis' :-)

the symposium will take place on the 6th of July, and includes the following strands:
- recent publications and findings on the role of simulations in education;
- the shift to distance-simulation workshops (debating the contents, methodologies and technological concerns) following the COVID-19 pandemic;
- the use of simulations for implementing social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies and skills;
- simulation models in education in Israel and around the world (clinical simulations, computer-based simulations, immersive simulations); and
- key issues in implementing and operating the simulative tool in teacher education programs and professional development around the globe.

i am excited to be a part of this event and it will be great to interact with my friends at the MOFET Institute again :-)

Yunnan Rangers hybrid AR board game at the 7th international conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network

our team has received news that we will be able to present a paper on the hybrid Augmented Reality (AR) board game that my team developed - Yunnan Rangers - during this year's international conference of the Immersive Learning Research Network (iLRN).

our paper is titled Communal Spaces As Ludic Resources Of Learning With Augmented Reality And Board Games. its abstract reads: This paper describes a learning activity using Augmented Reality (AR) which seeks to take advantage of the potential for learning about history and culture through exploration. This is represented by a garden in a university campus that affords visitors a scaffolded experience comprising a game-driven narrative in which visitors to the garden may assume the roles of different protagonists. In addition, we also sought to design a paper-based board-game for visitors who are not yet able to visit the garden in person. Both aspects of the learning activity – namely, the game-driven narratives in the actual garden as well as in the board-game equivalent – were piloted in December 2020. The study suggests that a combination of Augmented Reality, storyline and role-play could increase the probability of encounters with spontaneous elements in learners’ local environments that encourage learning.

iLRN 2021 runs from the 17th of May till the 10th of June, and i am scheduled to read the paper on the 2nd of June :-)

 

The SORBET Project: award at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2021

Hearty congratulations to my two student interns from Cedar Girls' Secondary School who partnered us under the auspices of my university's Nanyang Research Programme!

they have won the Singapore Association for the Advancement of Science (SAAS) Special Award at the Singapore Science and Engineering Fair (SSEF) 2021 for their work on the Socially Responsible Behaviour through Embodied Thinking (SORBET) Project!

The SORBET Project: sharing at the 21st International Conference on Education Research (ICER)

our team is very happy that we have been given the opportunity to share our work on the Socially Responsible Behavior through Embodied Thinking (SORBET) Project at this year's International Conference on Education Research (ICER).

for this opportunity, we will be sharing on Fostering collaborative dispositions in a peer-designed virus-diffusion simulation through the lens of Design-Based Research, which focuses on work done with students whom i mentor under the auspices of our university's Nanyang Research Programme.

the 21st ICER will be held on the 21st and 22nd of October :-)
