A guidebook on developing digital games for early grade literacy for developing countries - the manuscript has been accepted

back in September, i shared that our team had just been awarded a grant which commissioned us to write a guidebook on developing digital games for early grade literacy for developing countries.

the team applied themselves enthusiastically to the challenge.

we have just been informed that the manuscript has been accepted by the funding agency, jointly the Digital Learning for Development (DL4D) and All Children Reading: a Grand Challenge for Development (ACR-GCD).

Digital Learning for Development (DL4D) is part of the Information Networks in Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa (INASSA) program funded jointly by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the Department for International Development (DFID) of the United Kingdom, and administered by the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED) of the Philippines.

All Children Reading: a Grand Challenge for Development (ACR GCD) was launched by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), World Vision, and the Australian government, as an ongoing series of projects which leverage science and technology to create scalable solutions to improve literacy skills of early grade learners in developing countries.

Structured Academic Controversy in online learning environments

Dr Cheah Horn Mun - Assistant Provost, Singapore University of Social Sciences - and i have just had a chapter published in a volume edited by Angela Murphy, Helen Farley, Laurel Dyson and Hazel Jones. the chapter is based on the work done in relation to one of two projects described in a post i shared about eight months' ago.

as you can see from the pic, there are quite a number of case studies within Mobile Learning in Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific Region: harnessing trends and challenging orthodoxies.

Dr Cheah and i would like to congratulate the editors, and to thank them for their really great suggestions during the writing process of The use of Structured Academic Controversy in a mobile environment to broaden student perspectives and understanding in the social sciences.

i would also like to thank my interns Matthew Kho, Song Bing Heng, Hieu Nguyen Vu, for being so patient and diligent.

i'm planning to attend the 18th International Conference on Education Research, to be held in Seoul from the 18th till the 20th of October :-)

the conference theme is Lifelong learning for all: designing sustainable learning society.

Disciplinary Intuitions / Maker Motes: sharing with visitors from Hong Kong CoolThink@JC Computational Thinking Education Programme

on the 1st of August, my colleagues and i at the Learning Sciences Lab, National Institute of Education will be hosting a group of primary school teachers from Hong Kong, under the aegis of Hong Kong’s CoolThink@JC - Computational Thinking Education Programme. the latter is a four-year coding project in which coding is introduced to primary schools in Hong Kong.

the teachers will be visiting Singapore to:

- facilitate teachers’ understanding of ICT and coding education practices in ‘pioneer cities’;

- keep abreast of the latest progress of STEM, Computational Thinking and coding implementations at the international level; and

- enable teachers to experience the latest STEM-related technologies, services and products.

the visit was initiated by Professor Kong Siu-cheung, who is the Director of the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Technology at the Education University of Hong Kong. representatives from the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust will also be in attendance.

my team and i very much look forward to interacting with the teachers and members of the delegation :-)
