New Dimensions in Humanities Education
18 to 19 November 2008
The HSSE Academic Group at the NIE is proud to present the New Dimensions in Humanities Education 2008 conference to teachers, scholars and policy makers in education who wish to learn about the ways in which humanities education has been adjusting to new challenges in primary, secondary and tertiary education. This conference is special because it brings together scholars and teachers to explore how the broadening scope of education at every level has challenged them to rethink teaching humanities in a fast changing learning environment in the digital age. The conference will focus on new developments in content permeating primary and secondary education and new strategies of teaching that emerge at times of rapid change but are slow to influence scholars engaged in substantive research and in tertiary education. We hope to converge these seemingly mutually exclusive groups and interests to explore new ways of teaching humanities from a learner-centred perspective, which would help us to produce innovative and empowered students who can face the future with confidence.
The conference will encompass three main areas of humanities (i.e. geography, history and social studies) and pedagogy in all three areas. The proposed programme will cover various aspects of humanities education and every panel will combine exploratory papers on new developments in content, pedagogy and methods of teaching. We endeavour to present challenging views in every area to stimulate a dialogue across the disciplinary boundaries against the background of rapidly converging strands of learning. Three international leading scholars in geography, history and social studies education will give keynote addresses and also present papers. We hope to present many leading local scholars and prominent teachers in various panels to make this conference academically exciting and useful for all participants.
